You can replace the gasket without replacing the whole mechanism.
I wish you can only get the gasket instead of buying the whole canister kit. Very satisfied with the results. No tools required. Simply turn the stem counterclockwise and the complete canister comes off. Reverse the process to replace the gasket.

Pain in the %$(# but fixed all problems
The nature of this fix requires you take the tank off the toilet. Have a few towels around and remember to shut your water off. This product is toilet specific, there is no universal part to fix this. This part came from directly from Kohler Company via Amazon. Once I finally completed the 30-45 minute project it worked like a dream and no leaks. You definitely become intimate with the porcelain god in a way you haven't before'
