The Seventh Tower Volumes 1 - 3 the Fall, the Castle and Aenir

Garth Nix may not be a name you're familiar with, but get to know him. His Abhorsen Chronicles are great for older kids, a nice mix of fantasy and great story telling, but this series, The Keys to the Kingdom, is good for any age, from middle school up to adult. My son turned me on to this guy, and as a fellow who's spent the last 30 years working in bookstores, I can tell you Garth Nix writes better than most of the authors on the bestseller list. The series starts with Mister Monday, and the seven books cover each day of the week. Arthur Penhaligon is a young boy thrust into a world-saving adventure involving odd characters, magic, a crazy house of unending proportions, and something called the Will. The characters are captivating, but it's the clever dialogue and narrative that will stay with you. Pick up anything this man writes, you will never be disappointed.

I read these books when I was a kid. I absolutely love this story. It's very unpredictable with strong relatable characters. There's lots of wonderful beasts and magic that are very inspiring for young readers. I like this publishing in particular because it groups the first three books together. I remember when I got them individually as a kid I would read them so quickly and would have to wait until the next book in the series was published.

This is an awesome series, I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good story. Though the books themselves seem to be written for a younger audience, the story doesn't suffer from lack of depth nor does it want for detail or complexity. My only complaint with this series as a whole is the ending, it feels as if it should have a continuation after the last book, maybe even another trilogy. Even so, it is definitely a must read.

The book that introduced me to Garth Nix, in 5th grade, 10 years ago. It's excellent, especially for a developing mind. It's the initial formula for much of his future work.
