OCTO Classic 2000-HOB Protein Skimmer

So far So good!!! Updated.
I received my Classic 100-HOB and feel days ago and on time. Assembly was simple and pretty much self explanatory. I immediately placed it in my 150g tank and plugged it in. As expected, it produced a great deal of foam and the foam overflowed quit a bit. I think no matter what protein skimmer you purchase your going to run into the foam overflow problem when you first start your skimmer.Because I was expecting the overflow I had properly prepared. Having a tile floor was a big plus. After several adjustments I was able to control the foam. As a precaution I placed the retaining cup as high as possible. Also as a precaution I unplugged the unit for the first night. The following morning I plugged the skimmer back up and to my surprise the foam was under control. I am still making adjustments to the cup but I expected over the next few days to get it to a permanent level. I am starting to get skim mate and I am sure it will increase over the next few days.At this point, I am extremely happy with the skimmer. It is powerful, quiet, and fits perfect behind my tank and hidden by my canopy. I will update my review in a few weeks.UPDATE; I love my reef octopus. It has settled down and producing so much skim mate. It is the perfect size and is very powerful. What I like the most is it is ultra quiet. I highly recommend this product.

This is a great HOB skimmer and fits under a hood
I went through 3 different skimmers trying to find the right one for my 55 gallon aquarium. The plumbing in a lot of skimmers sticks up to far for the wood canopy I have covering the top of my tank but this one was perfect because the plumbing sits directly on the rim of the tank. This skimmer is pretty quiet and effective - it pulls a lot of stuff out of the water. 2 things to mention 1) The instructions aren’t great so google a YouTube video for assembly and 2) The instructions tell you it takes a few weeks to break in, I didn’t believe it but it really does so just be patient

Great and easy to use skimmer
I am writing this as a newcomer to the saltwater aquarium hobby. I’ve had this for a month on newly setup 60 gallon tank. No fish yet so I’ll update later if my opinion changes. This is super quiet. I’ve had no issues with micro bubbles in the tank. Again, not knowing what I was doing I simply followed manufacturer directions and watched their YouTube video. Setup was quick. It cleared up my tank after adding live sand after about 12 hours and that was super impressive to me. It’s amazing how much it removes from just sand and dry rock, so I’m very hopeful for the results after fish are added.

4 yrs and still great!
I usually don't write reviews on amazon but this one I think I should. It's 4th year now running this skimmer and it is still doing a good job without major trouble.Occasionally you have to break off the salt deposits inside the air inlet pipe but it is inevitable maintenance I believe. Overall this is by far the best small-sized skimmer for me. I'm using it for 40g tank. Solid product!

This Protein Skimmer is garbage and will cause damage!
I am writing to let you know that I will never buy nor recommend another one of this company's products. I purchased the 100-HOB protein skimmer. I followed the set up instructions to the letter, I even watched several instructional videos to make sure I set it up properly. The damn thing would not stop over flowing out of the top. The overflowing water caused damage to my floor, it shorted out a electrical outlet and several expensive pieces of hardware plugged into it, and damn near almost started a fire. No matter what I tried, nothing would prevent the protein skimmer from foaming over the top. I spent almost $200.00 on this product and it has cost me almost $1500 in damages/repairs. I will be submitting complaints and reviews everywhere I can. reef octopus should have never released this garbage to customers and should recall it immediately. I know I am one of many who has had this issue and it doesn't seem like reef octopus is doing anything to rectify it.

Working great for me - it has been several months
It has been several months and the skimmer is working great for me. It takes about 3-5 days to break in but then it goes nuts. I should have gone for the model with the pump outside water - aesthetics are better in that. But performance wise, I did not see any issues. Just make sure you donot place in too much light as it tends to build up lot of algae and regular clean up will be required. This is a must have product in your aquarium - (I have saltwater aquarium). You will realize how much gunk it takes out of water, that a cannister filter cannot take out.I gave one star less for design and the top plastic is a bit got cracked (nothing major)- and I am sure I never dropped it or handled it roughly.

Good skimming, horrible maintenance
Efficient protein skimmer when run wet. I am using it on a 125 gallon reef tank.Pros:good skimming, not noisy, fits in small places if your sump is fullCons:impossible to clean with big hands. Since the thing sits on the back or side of your tank and is made out of clear acrylic, algae grows like crazy from your tank lights. The openings are only like two to three inches wide and you have to take piping off to get down in it. Worst thing is you don't know it's super dirty until it starts to constantly overflow.I would not buy again if I could do over for the maintenance issue alone. I'd go with a cylinder one and just plumb it into my sump

Professional reviewer
Ok so after trying 3 different protein skimmers all rated pretty high stars and newly manufactured within the last year or 2 I was a little hesitant to try this quite a bit older skimmer technology.. man am I glad I tried it because I have to say it's way better then the newer ones!!! Only few micro air bubbles compared to all the rest... not enough to be bothersome... it doesnt leak all over the place..It starts taking gunk out right away!!! I am very well pleased overall to find a protein skimmer that actually works with my 65 gallon higher tank setup!!!!! Who's says old technology isnt sometimes the best tech!!!
