This is a medical tool for performing indirect ophthalmoscopy
My wife had one of these for doing eye exams on dogs (a safer way of doing an eye exam on dogs & cats without placing your nose & face at risk), but gave hers away when she retired from veterinary practice. As a human doctor (both by birth and training, respectively), I've always used the standard handheld direct ophthalmoscope. However, I'm in the process of working with some colleagues to record retinal exams with smartphones, and this lens appears to fit the bill. Excellent optics, per my own ophthalmologist. I'm just an endocrinologist.
