“I like to remember things my own way”
So let’s address the elephant in the room first; Yes, this U.K. release inexplicably does not come with the 4K disc, unlike the U.S. version. Much like the British releases of the Double Indemnity and Menace II Society Blu-ray’s before it, Criterion have forsaken us British fans a beautiful, UHD/HDR disc of one of David Lynch’s finest, most mysterious films. And as a result, there’s no way I can give this release the full 5 stars. Now, with that out of the way, what we do get is still pretty darn great. The Lynch-approved 4K restoration looks simply fantastic in 1080p, and this release is roughly a hundred times better than the HD version we got back in 2012 in that David Lynch Blu-ray box set, from an A/V standpoint. It’s also adorned with some excellent supplements, including the feature length “Pretty As A Picture” documentary, and a booklet with extracts from the “Lynch on Lynch” book.As for the film, it’s almost impossible to write a synopsis. It’s a demented fever dream that is best enjoyed if one simply just “goes with it”, accepting and unquestioning of some of the utterly strange and perplexing things that happen. And like every Lynch film, the more you watch it, the more the buried meanings are apparent, and another layer of revelation as to what might be going on is slowly peeled off. The film is full of terrifying and disturbing imagery that have stayed with me ever since I first saw it as an unsuspecting teen on Film4 back in the day. Things like the creepy videotapes, Fred Madison slowly disappearing into a pitch black hallway in his house, the Mystery Man, and the flashes of the recorded murder scene, are more existentially haunting and affecting than anything in a dozen Conjuring movies. It also has a great soundtrack. So yes, the inexplicable exclusion of the 4K disc in this country means this ultimately, and frustratingly, falls short of being the “definitive” release. But for those not bothered about a 4K disc, or who haven’t climbed onto the UHD bandwagon, this is the best version of this classic film we’ve ever had. Fantastic picture and audio, and a host of suitably excellent extras, the likes of which we’ve grown to expect from Criterion, I’d say this is a must buy for Lynch fans, and anyone who likes their Neo-Noir’s surreal, horrifying and hypnotic, in equal measure.

WE'RE ALL ON A LOST HIGHWAY!!
Released way back in 1997, David Lynch’s Lost Highway is one of his better films at the time mixing Drama, Fantasy and Mystery, the result is a good but flawed film, whilst watching it you’re asking yourself what the hell is going on.Plot is of – a couple of man and wife – Bill Pullman and Patricia Arquette of which they receive video tapes of someone recording their house, after meeting a spooky stranger at a gathering Bill Pullman is arrested for murder. He is then transformed into his younger self and the police let him go.Afterwards, he is having lots of sex with girls and finds employment working as a mechanic for the late RICHARD Prior. He soon finds himself working for a local gangster of whom his parent’s don’t approve!I think that the director is trying to tell us that we’re all on a Lost HIGHWAY AT OUR PRESENT LIFES WANTING TO BE SOMEONE ELSE AND SOMEWHAT YOUNGER SO THIS IS WHAT THIS FILM IS ALL ABOUT!This product from Criterion is a good, solid package as to me this is enough of what you would get from a David Lynch release, many other reviewers are complaining that there’s no 4K BD copy of the film included in the package. This to me is no problem as this film doesn’t NEED to be on 4K BD as this film is very good on standard 1080p BD!The 4K BD format is very overrated and I don’t rate it to be honest. The A/V quality is very good, the picture is sharp and well detailed and it’s as good as it’s going to get on 1080 BD!Audio, is on DTS HD MASTER 5.1 AND 2.0 soundtracks, I’ve watched the whole film on DTS 5.1 and the sound is great, a little bit ear shattering but that’s what’s the main difference between A/V in the first place when BD was invented years ago. You’re right in the film!Special features on the single disc include a feature making of documentary and other small docs and other small materials including a booklet inside the slipcase, I just wish there was a audio commentary by either director, producers, cast and crew or someone which would have been better, never mind though.Final thought:David Lynch’s Lost Highway is released on standard 1080p BD from Criterion, a good and weird and spooky mystery and is one of the director’s better films. A fantastic sounding film is matched by good picture quality and some good but small extras on the disc make this one of the better releases of the year on standard 1080p BD!

For the hardcore Lynch fans only.
I'm not going to try and explain the plot as it will honestly give me a bad head. Il be honest the Criterion release isn't crisp looking as soon of there other releases.the picture quality has a very matt look to it and parts of the picture look over exposed to a degree BUT! I generally think David Lynch intended for the film to look this way. I will say this release does look 100% better than the German Blu ray I had over 10 years ago.

Insult to injury
Review is for product, not the movie itself. Not only is the UK Criterion release missing the 4K disc but it also comes in a standard amray as opposed to the pleasing digipack used on the US release. Unbelievable.

NO 4K Disc included!
Same Criterion release than in the US, but missing the most important thing: actually 4K Disc. :(
