It has a replaceable blade set up. My first straight edged razor and I'm happy with it.

Can an average person use it to shave/trim the beard ?

Shaving with straight blade razor needs experience. It's very easy to cut the skin! I don't know what an "average person" in respect of shaving.

Buy a new set of blades from any store (you dont need to buy the razor holder) and snap the blade into half and slide it in.
