A lot you may not know about Africa
Ancient African Empires makes an important contribution to man’s understanding of the history of culture in Africa. Much of it is devoted to Egypt and Carthage, of course, because of their tremendous impact upon world history, but the book provides what is likely to be a first look to many readers about other important early African civilizations. The book begins with the prehistory of Africa which is helpful to understanding how these civilizations rose. The well-organized format of the book makes it very easy to read and to quickly go back and find sections in the book to refresh one’s memory about specific facts and insights. The section about slavery in ancient Africa may surprise many readers who may have no idea about the existence of slavery in sub-Saharan cultures, which still persists today in some areas, having only learned about the imposition of slavery on black Africans by the East and the West.Despite my overall favorable impression of the book, however, I would like to have seen more about the history of West Africa included. There is only a half of a page devoted to the fascinating Empire of Ghana in West Africa. Other important and very interesting West African empires which I believe most readers would love to learn about, that of the Kingdoms of Mali and Songhai, are mentioned only in passing, as the author/publisher provides the explanation that the scope of the book is limited to events prior to 1000 CE. So, for example, the reader will not find here the fascinating stories of Sundiata Keita (both a real and a mythical figure), the founder of the Kingdom of Mali, and a later successor, Mansa Mousa, whose wealth in gold was so great that, when passing through Egypt on his pilgrimage to Mecca, he spent so much gold it broke the economy of the country.Despite my personal desire for a bit more on West African civilizations, book provides a good, basic history about ancient African civilizations and is very valuable addition to Enthralling History series.

A Collection for the Ages
Anyone with a strong desire to learn about the continent of Africa from a historical, mythological point of view should start here. Every question may not be answered but the author provides more than enough information to digest for months and years! Historically, African history has been divided between North and Sub Saharan. A history, if it not were for the amazing architecture, art and music has been maligned and distorted for generations. This text does a fantastic job of dispelling the myths surrounding the history of the dark continent! Highly recommended!

Very Ambitious Books
These books are ambitious. There is no way these tomes can comprehensively cover Empires of the whole African continent. It begins with African prehistory and at breakneck speed takes the reader through a quick review of African civilizations. As for the African Empires, it focuses mainly on the North African empires, primarily Egypt and Carthage. The sub Saharan empires get a mention, but not a thorough discussion as Egypt. Nothing is said of the Bantu empires in the first section. The Second part is named Ancient Carthage which is a precise title. The last section is a broad review and summary of African myths, hero’s and shamanistic practices. Again it is rather ambitious and may have been better to do a thorough examination of a few areas rather than a cursory review of the continent’ s mythical traditions, hero’s and shamanism practices. The books are an enjoyable and breathtaking review of African Empires and Mythology. Any reader would enjoy the journey through African history and culture.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A Good Read
I liked that it covered far more than the Egyptian Empire. It was a very interesting read. The mythology was new to me and added a new understanding of the culture.
