The $40 model is the classic Porta Pro. It has a different cable (90deg plug, no button/mic). This one has an updated cable with a straight plug and metal spring strain relief. It has a mic/remote as well (works really well). Other than that it's the same as the classic. Both models have the Koss Lifetime Warranty.

Why does it say it needs a battery?🤨

The Bluetooth version has a rechargeable battery but it comes with that built in. Not sure why it would say that. The wired versions do NOT need a battery if you''re looking at the Porta Pro headphones.

How good is the microphone?

The microphone works well. Better then the simple ones given with new phone earpiece.

does it come with a hard carry case?

No, it comes with a soft, leather-like pouch.
