Q: Hi, Is this compatible with a manfrotto Befree advanced head or would I need an adapter to fit it onto the manfrotto ball head?

I don't know the Manfrotto head, but this clamp has a standard 3/8" thread to attach to a tripod or head. Be advised, though, that it is compatible with Arca-Swiss release plates and not Manfrotto plates.

Q: clamp doesn't stop plate from sliping out when in mid position unless you fully tighten screw, surely this defeats quick release can somone confirm?

Not sure what you are getting at. If the locking lever is in mid position, no it will not be secure enough. I have one of these fitted to my crane 3. Pretty good apart from one mishap where a tweak was required to tighten.

I think that tripod is the befree one with a B&S head. If so, on its own there is very little advantage to having this quick release clamp. I have a few Arca type plates and heads, and mounting them by turning the clamping screw is a pain, particularly during the cold winter months. My quick release clamp is mounted so that I don't have to use the screw clamp. I have a few Manfrotto heads and I leave them alone.

I have used it with a gripped 5d and 100-400 but have an extra lanyard in case
