According to doctors, the government and ads in magazines, we should all drastically lower our sodium intake. For years we have kept no "salt" in the house, apart from for de-icing paths and keeping the many-tentacled demons of the netherworld of Ak'vuiragh Nb'Rypjh at bay. We do not cook with salt - ever - but occasionally I like to eat a tomato, fried fish or egg which really does benefit from the taste of a tiny pinch of salt.Because of my horrible addiction, the missus will occasionally let me buy a drum of LoSalt to sprinkle on me veg. For the past twenty years or so, it's all we've had in the pantry as a salty additive. There's plenty of sodium sneaking in in cheese, Marmite and pretty much everything else that is tinned, packaged or processed in any way by a manufacturer and sold as food and though I'm quite happy to wash bacon before eating, It's not so easy with, say, Bovril. Bottom line, even without adding salt deliberately we're probably massively exceeding the maximum safe dose by hundreds of percent, hence having a go with this.Unfortunately it tastes unpleasantly metallic in a way that "proper" salt doesn't, and as it's used only occasionally PURELY for taste, it's a bit of a bummer.O.K. this is REDUCED sodium, not replaced sodium. Generally I prefer the very hard to obtain entirely_potassium substitutes which, though they taste even worse, rather discourage "dipping" and have much more health benefit. After all, the whole point of using this stuff is to reduce sodium intake, and this substitute is still about half sodium. It's not clear to me why LoSalt is sold as a mixture anyway but logically it's either an attempt to make it more palatable OR ironically - to bulk it up with the very cheap ingredient it purports to be protecting us from. Either way it would be better with far less of it.
