do you have to remove the strap in order to fit the earbuds in the charging case?

It does seem to work. I'm trying it now and watching my phone widget -- the charge level has been rising steadily. When you put the buds in the charging box, give a very gentle nudge to be sure that the charging contacts on the phone are making contact with those in the box. This works if you're charging on a table, or whatever because, of course, you can't close the box all the way with the strap attached. If you've got the charging box in your pocket or bag, you'd probably want/need to remove the strap.

Does this interfere with any of the touch capabilities on the buds themselves

No I haven't noticed any interference. I stopped using them tho because it's hard to charge them in the case with them on.
