Great buy for a first guitar.
I'm a guitarist and taught guitar in the past, and wanted something cheap for my 7 year old son to play, knock about, scratch, fall over etc before I finally let him loose on one of my spares. I wasn't expecting much, it was damn cheap, but it actually wasn't bad. I hate classical style guitars, they never stay in tune. This does hold it's tune better than some I've played though. Maybe I'll by some better strings at some point to help the tuning. It's constructed well enough for the the £35 I paid, you're not going to get a rosewood fingerboard here, but it's adequate. How the heck they make guitars for so little these days is beyond me, building guitars is a slow detailed job. If my son does show little or no interest I've not wasted any money. If he takes an interest, then I've subtly inspired him on the sly and I have someone to play music with eventually! The finish by the way is really nice, I like the orange tint to the body.

AVOID!!
DO NOT BUY!! This was bought for a 9-year-old. My husband - who has 30 years experience as a guitar player & teacher said it was the worst guitar he had ever tried to play. It is not possible to play. Doesn't tune, worst fret buzz, very poor quality frets, string action is too low which means there is no room for them to ring out. Extremely poor tonal balance. It Looks nice - which is all well and good, but if it there is no way to get a good sound out it, it has no value as a guitar in any musical sense or as an instrument. It would also be very offputting to people new to guitar, who are learning and who may not realise the awful sound quality is down the guitar and not their inability to play. We have quite a few guitars, most which are quite expensive - since making good quality guitars is an art in itself - however, it Is possible to find a good sounding and inexpensive 3/4-children's guitar. But this is not the one. It's theoretically possible that this was a dud guitar but it's unlikely given that the issues with this guitar are so basic even one of the myriad issues would be caught by a legitimate guitar seller. Avoid.

Good for the price
For the price this is a good buy, however I would pay more money to get better quality next time. One annoying thing is the guitar has no fret position markers which would be very useful for kids as they are learning.

Sub-standard Frets that hardly protrude from the fret board and long action
Generally nice sounding guitar, but 2 big issues. The action is way too long, I had to file down both nut and saddle. The Frets almost don't exist. It looks more like the rest of the fret board was sanded down a little, leaving some fret-like protrusions between the sanded parts, which were then painted to look like frets or coated with something. They are a fraction of the height of any other fret I have ever seen (including a sponge bob square pants 1/4 size kids guitar), very disappointing. I will never waste money on anything Martin Smith branded again.

Brought for 9 year old
Brought for.9 year old for Xmas to stop her taking her sisters one I must admit she loves it brilliant for kids that are not serious about their playing she's trying to learn but it doesn't hold tune she's always playing on it months on not sure my neighbours approve but it keeps her happy.
