surprisingly bad
The actors are great and so is the setting, its starts off really slow the first 20 minutes feel like 40. But then it picks up, the story is told in parts so something will happen and then they will revile how that part of the plot happened. However in all the jumping back and forth in the story, crucial elements are left out and the story makes less and less sense as loyalties change and you are not sure why some sub characters betray the main ones. Also the double twist just really does not work for me it feels like a coupe out. It is disappointing

Tedious
I've tried twice now, but I can't stand this film. The acting is horrible - "orl rite guvna" and "ows yer farva" - stilted and just unbelievably terrible. Christopher Priest is a good writer, but they moided dis ta def, me ol' sun. Unwatchable.

Surprisingly good
Admittedly, most Christopher Nolan films I've seen have been pretty good, so when a friend recommended I see this, I figured I had nothing to lose. The acting is brilliant, both Jackman and Bale give their all as bitter rivals. Michael Caine can just do no wrong, and gives such an authentic perfomance. My only real gripe about the film is that Scarlett Johansson is seriously under used. But that's it, nothing else to complain about. The story is clever and draws you in, and it was heart warming to see David Bowie in the role of Tesla.A film well worth watching and some great twists

the cover doesnt do this film justice
wow what an amazing film, had my attention all the way through, the end was wonderful. what a prestigious cast of actors, beautifully produced and directed, amazing story line........... I will be thinking about this for ages. THis really deserves 5 stars.

The original story is made petty and unpleasant in this adaptation.
I liked that the world and characters of the book were captured and even developed (most notably Cutter’s, played by Michael Caine) but I was frustrated by the deviations from how things happened in the book, how violently malicious Borden and Angier were towards each other and the change to the ending. It feels as if Nolan through the it needed more shock value but he just made it deeply petty and unpleasant instead of a good, authentically creepy Victorian Gothic tale.

This film is in itself, a magic trick.
I don't think I've been engrossed in a film until the end like I was with this film for a very long time.Awesome cast, very well directed, epic performance all around. very well worth my time.

Victorian magical Batman vs wizardly Wolverine and whose side is the Black Widow on?
No spoilers.Ok the headline refers to other characters that Bale, Jackman and Johansson have played (Rebecca Hall has also shown up in a superhero film but I digress). I've watched this several times and enjoyed the back and forth between Victorian characters and time periods (the latter a strength of Nolan). Michael Caine adds gravitas and David Bowie as Nikola Tesla has to be worth the price of admission alone.

overrated and implausible
A very irritating film that fails to live up to the promise of its cast. Hugh Jackman's accent goes on a journey that's much more interesting that his character's arc. The best performances here are from the three women who more or less share the same role. A film about magicians without any magic.
