Any ideas how to release the blade when a hammer tap doesn't work? I have seen a suggestion to soak it in water but not tried that yet.

i think that if you soak in water then the wood will swell and make it even tighter. i found that gentle tapping on each side will release the blade, another method might be to hold the end of the blade and tap the back of the body i have had success with both these methods.

I think you are talking about a blade and chip breaker. This plane has just a blade no chip breaker. It is very basic and I would not recommend. Spend a little bit more and get one with a chip breaker. You are going to have to set the plane up to get it working. Check it out online so you know what you are getting into. Being wood it’s fairly easy to set up with a few basic tools. A Japanese plane is usually supplied unusable until you do the setup.

How thin can this plane shave off?

Set up correctly it can take off a see-through shaving - suggest practicing on an offcut until you get setup bang on

Frst of all, this is a small plane with a 4cm blade. It was very sharp and the depth is very easily set with a gentle tap of a hammer. As described, this is a plane for finishing edges. All seven internal doors in my house needed resizing. I used this tool to work on the cross grain top and bottom and the long sides. As would be expected it was better on the long grain. In fact, it was excellent here and coped better than could be expected with the end grain. All in all, the best tool I had for the edge work. The cut of Japanese saws is made by pulling towards the user, not pushing away. This plane is the same, grasped on the top side and pulled inwards.
