It gave an accurate reading for about 5 min.
I bought this to set the timing on a GM 350, I just needed an accurate RPM reading, for the first 5 minuets it seemed to work fine idle speed of 285 RPM. After shutting the engine off and restarting it was reporting the idle speed as 2500, the engine was obviously NOT running at 2500. I checked the setup of the meter, it was correct for sparks per rotation but continues to report high RPM at idle each time the engine is started.

Knowing my Idle speed before hand was critical in setting it up correctly.
I'm breaking in a brand new outboard and the motor manual says idle is 900rpms. When setting up the tack I was completely wrong on my setting guess. I was fortunate just to be able to cycle through the options and stop when the tack said exactly 900rpms while the engine was idling. Works great! Update- This unit is not waterproof. It fell into a puddle of water in the bottom of the boat and it filled up and quit working. I bought another one.
