If you are considering this book I have a simple suggestion...just BUY it already :DThis is an excellent resource for teachers and administrators working with students in ANY grade level. I am not currently teaching and yet this summer I'm already re-reading this book for the second time. It is that good! I am certified to teach 1st-12th grades with a M.Ed in Exceptional Education but feel I was more adequately trained to work with younger students. This book would be especially helpful for middle school and high school teachers.Although I do think it's full of appropriate information for elementary school teachers, I found myself reflecting on my brief stint as a middle school reading/ language arts teacher. TPT would have helped me do a better job encouraging active learning and total participation...exactly what the book cover says!I purchased TPT because I have been out of the classroom for a several years and want to stay up to date. Grad school for me was over in the 90's... yikes! I most recently taught kindergarten and especially appreciate the authors' perspective on movement and learning with older students. The strategies in this book naturally lend themselves to effective inclusiveness in the classroom and there are practical suggestions for creating a "safe" learning environment for students of various abilities. I particularly like how the information in the book is supported with evidence of what works and doesn't work in the classroom. I wish this book was required reading for all high-school teachers and administrators. Teachers and students would be happier, more productive, and engaged in the classroom if the suggestions in TPT were followed.I love to learn and I love to teach. I most certainly loved reading this book. I probably will edit this review with more specific points after my second reading. Excellent!Edit: I gave my first copy away to a high school principal and am back for another. The ideas presented in this book would be ideal for an in-service day presentation.

Very useful especially for large classes
I teach 30-42 students at a time and it can be tough making sure everyone can take part in class. This book helps make it possible to ensure every child can participate in various ways with catchy names that the kids love.

If you have spent any time at all in public school, you don't need this book
I got this book as part of the required readings for my senior practicum class where I work in the schools full time. The book doesn't offer any creative or new ideas on maintaining participation. It is really basic. If you have spent any time at all in public school, you don't need this book. Some of the suggestions are walking around the classroom, one-word summaries, list group label, and other common practices.
