These are traditional Japanese wood carving chisels, the kind you can hold in your hand, about 8" (200 mm) long, not the smaller ones that come in sets that are about 4" (100 mm) long. The quality is excellent. The blades are laminated, Blue Paper #2 steel if that means anything to you. Carbon steel alloyed for toughness that takes a keen edge and is readily sharpened.They came sharp and hold their edge well. You're going to need to learn to sharpen them, but if you do they will serve for a very long time.I'm very satisfied and would definitely do it again and recommend.

I purchased this set based on all of the hype over their quality and the fact that they are "blue paper steel". They arrived with dented handles on three of the chisels. One of the chisel blades was set crooked into the handle. I was able to bend it straight with a pair of pliers.......not something you can do with metal with a hardness rating of 60+. The edge on the 3mm chisel was ground crooked. These would be OK for a novice if they didn't cost so much, but are worthless for an established artist or professional.

Wow,the set came woodcarver sharp and they are so well made. New carvers should buy the cheaper high carbon steel version,the white paper steel version is for more experienced carvers and is very hard steel,so if you have bad habits of prying wile you carve,you could damage the edge...maybe? This set is hand made buy generational black smith and wood carvers. The set comes unstained, so I brushed on a light layer of walnut oil to waterproof it some. Would buy again.
