I play music from my lap top (itunes) plugged into my hi fi, can i use this so as to bypass my lap tops sound card and therefore improve sound quality

Yes you can, once connected USB you should see a new sound device for the "Speakers, AudioEngine D1", set this as your default device if on windows.

Can I connect my PS4 to this via optical, then on to my speakers using RCA? Or headphones from the front?

Yes you can, but you also need to connect via USB for power to a power outlet or computer. Connecting to ps4 usb for power doesn't work.

Does it also amplify the sound??

It doesn't. But it does produce a nicer, well rounded sound than the standard audio from your computer. If you have good quality audio files, it doesn't make them louder. Instead it allows you to appreciate the music more so than before. So when you do turn up the volume, the different levels in the music are more noticeable. Definitely the way to listen to your music / games / movies. Just make sure you have some nice headphones / speakers to back them up!

Can you connect it to your TV?

Most TVs have an optical out and RCA out for connecting to an external device for audio playback. Whether it be an amplifier, headphones or in your case a sound card. The Audio Engine D1 is no different. If I were you I would connect your TV to the D1 using premium interconnects. After all, you wouldn't buy a Ferrari and put budget tyres on it?!?
