Kitchen Craft Microwave Rice Cooker
I agree with the other 5* reviewers - this rice cooker is simple to use and produces excellent rice with very little trouble. There are many recipes in the reviews for cooking rice. But you can never have too many! Here's a hassle-free one for perfect, non-sticky rice:1. This is for white basmati in a 900-watt microwave.2. Put 1 cup of rice and 1 1/2 cups cold water in the rice cooker. Do not wash the rice and do not add salt.3. Put the lids on and cook on HIGH for about 7 minutes until just cooked (under-cook slightly rather than overcook).4. Put the rice in a strainer and swish cold water over it. This stops the cooking process and ensures separate grains.5. Drain the rice well, add salt as required, and return it to the rice cooker. When you are almost ready to serve, heat the rice on HIGH for 2 minutes without the lids on.This recipe is adapted from You Can Cook Indian TakeawayUpdate for brown basmati:In step 2, use 1 cup of rice to 3 cups of water. In step 3, cook for about 16 minutes.Everything else is the same.March 2014Still using this with no problems & it's still in perfect condition.I've used it for boiled potatoes & other veg but sprouts don't work. I wonder why?You really don't need to measure the water accurately, even for rice - a little more or less doesn't make any difference provided it doesn't boil dry.Jan 2016Used most days & still going strong.

Not bad
It does cook rice and pasta quite easily in the microwave. It is quite small so if you have a large family then you will have to do separate batches. It does sometimes have a tendancy to boil over so it is best to keep an eye on it whilst cooking. All in all though it is fast, easy to use and quite functional.

More than just a rice cooker
As others say, it's great for rice but, I also use mine to boil carrots, green beans, broccoli and potatoes. Easy to clean, fast, inexpensive. All in all, perfect for doing the veg for a singleton's Sunday roast. Use the leftover veg water to make the perfect gravy.Saves you a fortune in electricity or gas, too, as doing the above in the microwave saves a small fortune in this cost of living crisis. Less washing up. What more do you want? No brainer, buy at least one.

Makes a mess & difficult to rinse/strain rice
Firstly, it does work for it's intended purpose - it cooks rice. However, it makes a right mess of your microwave (even after pre-rinsing rice before cooking, it spits/spills thick starch everywhere and the rinsing is a nightmare, as the rice fits through the holes in the inner lid). I can't really comment on the ease of cleaning, as I use a dishwasher. All in all, I would not buy again.

A fine product
I was in the market for a rice cooker and I diligently searched Amazon's website for a suitable product. With prices ranging from around £15.00 to £50.00, I was surprised to see so many negative reviews for the products on offer. Then I saw this beauty. For £7.65, this unit is astonishingly brilliant. After 3 attempts, I started producing beautifully cooked fluffy rice with no waste whatsoever. No burnt rice on the base of the pan; every grain was perfect and edible. The real secret is learning your microwave oven. The brief instructions on the box is for a 1100W oven and gives a 8-10 minutes cooking time. I live alone and and therefore only need to make enough rice for myself. I put three quarters of the supplied cup of rice in the cooker together with a full cup of water; shoved it in the microwave (800W oven) and cook it for 9 minutes. After the time has expired, I give it a quick stir with the supplied spatula and there it is, ready to eat; perfectly cooked to my satisfaction. If you're looking for a good, cheap rice cooker, you can't go wrong. I can't praise this product enough! 5 stars all the way.

Almost perfect rice
UPDATE: I purchased this 5 years ago and we still use it every week. I even melted the top by mistake yet it continues to make perfect rice every time! 6 stars out of 5 from me ******.Very quick and easy to use. Easy to clean and durable. Our tips:- 2 measuring pots of rice to 4 measuring pots of BOILING water. Boiling water turned this okay cooker into a brilliant cooker!- Stir a little oil into the rice before adding the water- Try crumbling in a stock cube, or add herbs/spices to add extra flavour.- Cook for 5 minutes (full power), take out, stir, then cook for another 5 minutes (full power). Done!- Place the rice cooker on a plate in the microwave because if you get the quantities slightly wrong it will bubble over! We've had this for about 2 years and it's the only way we cook rice now. A great bit of kit and highly recommended by us.

Not what I expected
Why did you choose this product over others?:Usually get Rice Boys but there were none available this time. The KitchenCraft rice cookers are nowhere near the quality of the original Rice Boys. The locking handles come off on a regular basis which is really annoying, and quite dangerous when they’re full of hot food. I will not buy these again.

Replacement for previous one, not sure about the catches
We had one of these for many years in fact we may have had two over the years. Eventually it got dropped, one of the latching 'ears' (always the weak point) broke off and we had to replace it and chose to get yet another red topped Kitchencraft one. It seems well made, works well like the previous ones, and even has a little spoon with it! However the latching ears have been re designed, maybe to try for improvement but they remain the weak point, and in fact not as good as before. The 'catches' tend to slip below the lugs, from where you can't get them back in the right position without removing the latches. I suspect this is where they are going to break eventually, which will stop the pot from working properly. Also steam and hot water tends to leak if you are foolish enough to lift it by one lug, I leanred this the hard way! Bring back the old design! It worked well and only broke after many years of use. I don't think this one will last as long.
