A False Dichotomy
As a Westerner reading the Bhagavad Gita, I found parts that have permeated into the modern American ethos but, surprisingly, many parts which have not.One can find the ideas of divinity at the essence of all things, reincarnation and life’s goal being the cessation of all desire by yogic practice. All of these have been adapted, in a somewhat simplified form, by the new-age.But a surprising amount of the text is devoted to more abstract matters: theology, philosophic anthropology and metaphysics. In other words, there are many parts that could have been part of Plato’s dialogues or referenced and discussed by Aristotle.Perhaps the dichotomy between Western abstraction and Eastern practice is itself an oversimplification, at least on the basis of this text.In short, a fascinating work whose greater diffusion should help falsify the idea that there is some kind of irreducible divide between East and West.

"The Bhagavad Gita"
The book arrived quickly after the order was placed and in good condition. This particular translation is clear and understandable to the westerner in portraying Arjuna's battle for self mastery...a must for all of those who study comparative religion or who are on a quest of their own.

A good translation of an okay story
This being the only translation I've read I can't really compare against others but this one had lots of helpful information to get you better set in the story and had reference notes explaining what certain words westerners probably aren't familiar with meant. I don't really like the story itself but I think if you're going to read it this is probably one of the better ones to read.
