Where most people are steering clear of artificial ingredients this is one occasion it’s paramount that you don’t. You need a product that gives you that artificial barrier to protect your hair from the heat! Which only silicones can.So a little on heat protectants…A heat protectant adds moisture to your hair and forms a protective barrier. It reduces moisture loss caused by heat applied to your hair shafts. It prevents hair breakage and damage. It also minimizes heat damage due to blow-dryers and hair straighteners.Heat protectants are leave-in products used before styling your hair. They prevent moisture loss from factors like dehydration, high heat, or a dry environment. They work by adding a protective layer to your hair shaft. If you have extremely dry and damaged hair, apply the heat protectant while your hair is wet and top it off with a good conditioning serum, blow dry lotion and spray on/leave in conditioner before you start styling.Following is the list of ingredients to check for in a good heat protectant..Silicones: Heat protectants are generally made with a combination of two silicones – Cyclomethicone and dimethicone. While Cyclomethicone moisturizes your hair, dimethicone coats it and prevents moisture loss. Dimethicone forms a layer on your hair and makes your cuticles lie flat.Look for propylene glycol and keratin that retain hair moisture and strengthen your hair.PVP/DMAPA Acrylates Copolymer: This copolymer, like silicones, helps protect hair and detangles itHydrolyzed Wheat Protein: Hydrolyzed wheat protein conditions hair. It also takes the place of the natural hair proteins in the hair, which otherwise can get broken due to heat.A study looked at the effects of PVP/DMAPA acrylates copolymer, quaternium 70 and hydrolyzed wheat protein proved protection of heat damage from a curling iron works the best.Keep in mind that heat protectants only reduce the amount of damage caused by heat styling. They can’t completely protect your hair – even the best results show about 50% heat protection at most. They work – in particular, ingredients like PVP/DMAPA acrylates copolymer, quaternium 70, hydrolyzed wheat protein and silicones (silicone quaterniums, dimethicone) reduce heat damage, most likely by evening out porosity and how the hair heats up. However, they can’t insulate your hair from most of the damage, so you still need to minimise your hair’s exposure to heat styling! So the big question… how does this one compare to professional products.Unfortunately it’s lacking in a lot of the ingredients above. It contains some moisturising ingredients to replace the moisture lost with heat and it contains some keratin to help keep the hair strong. But it’s lacking in a lot of the main silicone ingredients that’s paramount. It’s a good basic protectant for the average head of hair but for highly bleached, fine or damaged hair it really isn’t strong enough.I tested this on my own lightened hair with a fast hot professional dryer and as you can see there wasn’t enough silicone to coat my hair to smooth it down.I only recommend this for certain hair types. Hence the 3 star.

Best for natural protection
Have tried numerous oils and heat protectants for hair with and without silcones and nasty chemicals. I prefer natural ones but they don't always work, but THIS ONE DOES :) no silcones nasty chemicals, is not sticky, the keratin smooths my dry highlighted hair, seems to do a good job of heat protection from hairdryer and straighteners. Am growing my hair out to natural grey now so looking forward to see how it behaves on that hair but have high expectations.

Extremely toxic smell
This smelt so nasty and toxic that after only using it twice I disposed of it.

Good product
So far I'm happy with this product. Not much I can say about it as it's a heat protector for your hair, I suppose you don't really see it working. It leaves your hair shiny though and the smell isn't too strong.
