With this duffel, I'd be more concerned with the shape of the contents. 50 pounds of linens in the large size would be fine. 50 pounds of rocks in the small size might not last. It can handle weight, but heavy objects with hard edges could damage the bag.

Q: Can it safely be washed in a washing machine?

I recommend checking and zipping-up all the pockets, then turning it inside out, closing the main zipper as much as possible. Use mild detergent and wash in warm water on the gentle setting. To dry, turn outside back out and Hang dry or on a towel with a dry towel inside.

Q: Can you carry it on the airplane?

You can CHECK IT on a plane. It's HUGE. You may be able to take it as carry on if it was only partially full. It's super soft/moldable (parachute material).
