Don't be afraid. A heavy-weight kindler.
This tool initially seems very heavy for kindling, especially if you've only previously used a billhook or lighter splitting tool. At 2.5 lbs it is weighty and not a well balanced tool. However, it is an amazing piece of kit. It's great for splitting smaller logs - 4 inches for oak, up to 8 for chestnut - and acts like a maul thanks to the fat wedge angle. For kindling it works a dream as long as you change your grip position. Move your grip closer to the handle - there's plenty of weight, so providing momentum/force to kindle is not hard work. It intrinsically feels safer than a long splitting blade too, and having recently lost a finger tip and nail to a cleaver this tool gives me the confidence to split without too many worries about injury.A well made and reasonably priced tool for the hee-man log splitter in the family. Adds instant macho aura.

The bluntest axe ever.
I ordered this axe in September ready for chopping kindling in the winter. It was a pretty mild Autumn so it wasn't until the end of November that I removed the rubber blade protector ready to chop kindling. Why there was a protector there at all is baffling as you could barely cut cheese with it. The blade is extremely thick so it will take a lot of work to sharpen it enough to get an edge on it. I'm not even sure how one would do this. Do not buy this product if you want to do any sort of cutting. I can't return it as the returns window shut at the start of October. Pointless purchase.

A great peice of kit!
Should have bought one ages ago. Just the right weight and length to, almost, drop it onto the wood and it slides through. Easier to use than an axe and not as heavy or unwieldy as a splitting maul.

Big Tree Small Axe
I bought the splitter to prepare kindling from split hard wood logs for my wood-burner stove. I was surprised that the edge of the instrument was not sharper. Sure enough, the first few blows just bounced off the logs. This contrasted with my hand axe which if it doesn't split the log first time digs in & enables one to lift axe & log together for a 2 handed whack which usually does the job. Fair enought, the splitter is good for smaller pieces of wood, it may also work better with soft woods but that is speculation. I may try grinding it to a sharper edge & see if that helps. So heeding the advice of Bob Marley; for my bigger trees I find myself reaching for the small axe.

Thought the blade would be sharp
See the heading, this explains my consideration and rating for the item. Had it been made known that a sharp blade was not normal .i would have ordered the Fisker X7 axe only
