Q: Wouldn't it be more practical to just buy a 50 cent can of corn to fish with?

No, the plastic corn stays on the hook. Baits a hair rig is time consuming and having a scented bait thst will not come off catches more fish because the bait is in the water more

Q: Do they float well on a hair rig?

Not sure if they float when new. I found this out by mistake .. I add sweet corn oil which helps them float and swells them from normal corn size to feed corn size.. they already do have a great smell before I add to them. Oh, also I would compare the softness to that of a artificial bass worm. Cheaper corns are more like a pencil eraser.. the oil will soften them as well but not so much. Hope that helps.. tight lines !
