Very Silent and Strong
I cannot speak to the longevity of this filter, since I have only used it for two days now. I understand that some of these reviews state that it dies after about a month. I hope that is not the case. However, I can confirm that it is unnoticeable, as far as noise is concerned! You cannot hear the motor or the impeller turning. You have to focus and strain your ears to hear anything at all. If you do, it is the movement of the water which you hear, not the filter! And the look and construction is simple! There are no fancy curves or obstructing attachments which would make it difficult to clean.Since I discard the black block of foam that is provided (as the only filter media) and replace it with a name brand filter pouch, it obstructs a little of the inbound flow which results in a minor back flow into the tank. This is irrelevant to me as the majority of the water flows through the white filter pouch and the carbon that is inside the pouch. I buy size M filter cartridge (from that popular name brand), discard the blue or green plastic frame, pour the silver packet of carbon into the white pouch, rinse, roll it up and wiggle that tiny "burrito" vertically into the section where the black foam was supposed to fit. I also have a sponge filter running in my little three-gallon desktop tank, so theoretically, I have addressed physical, chemical and biological filtration. I don't know if this is overkill, but it's just what I do.My sponge filter is set to flow very slowly just in front of this "hang on filter" in an attempt to diffuse the water flow... because this filter is STRONG. I would never put a betta into this environment! Not even if I diffused the water flow with a mountain range of rocks! That's how strong this filter is. This filter can easily match a five-gallon tank, of course, depending on the species and quantity of fish you are raising. If I had a handful of small fish in a five-gallon like danios or minnows, it's perfect. It just depends. For example, I would indeed use this filter for a fighting fish if on the gentlest flow setting, in a ten-gallon tank, and the tank was heavily planted with live plants. My little tank has a thicket of anubias and Java ferns and 7 Rummy Nose Tetras. I know. Overcrowded. But they are fat and healthy. They get partial water changes twice a week!Altogether, I love this filter. My water is pristine!

Great back filter for a betta tank
This filter works perfectly on my 2.5 gallon planted betta tank. The suction takes a little bit to get started, but once it does, it filters very well. It fits very well on my thin rim tank. The filter media is good for trapping natural organic filtration. I've actually got plants growing inside the filter lol. The water is super clear. I'm very happy with this filter. It provides the perfect amount of flow to not overpower my betta from swimming while still adding enough current to oxygenate the water.

KILLS FISH!! Do not buy
***UPDATE 2: Well the filter floss didn't work and somehow this filter claimed the life of another fancy guppy. For this reason, I cannot recommend this filter. I'm not entirely sure how the guppies are fitting through the tiny slots on the intake tube and I'm not sure how the guppy got through the filter floss, but I found chunks of its body in the sponge of the filter so I can only assume it was sucked in somehow. It's a very odd occurrence but it's happened twice so I took the filter out and can't recommend it to anyway with fish.***UPDATE: THIS FILTER KILLED MY FISH!! My fancy guppy got sucked into the very tiny slots somehow and was killed. I would caution anyone with small or slower fish with longer fins (such as betta) to watch out with this filter and I had it on the lower setting. I didn't think a fancy guppy was small enough to get sucked in and I have had the filter running for at least 6 weeks with no incidents until now. Apparently it's always a possibility. After the death of one of my fish, I modified the intake by wrapping some filter sponge around the slots. The company should consider selling this filter with a precut filter sponge as an effort to minimize fish deaths. I'm not sure how the rubber bands will hold up in water is my main concern now but I will still give this filter two stars because it is a good and powerful filter for just $10. Just use it with precaution as it is more powerful than you think. I did state in my original review that it was powerful but didn't realize it was powerful enough to dismember a guppy. I will update if filter sponge does not work.ORIGINAL: Perfect for my micro tank (1.5 gallons). Be careful, it's very powerful even on the lowest setting, but just what I needed. I have tetras and guppies which don't seem to mind the powerful filter. Doesn't catch everything but definitely helps, super easy to clean. Only complaint is the piece they include help hold the filter flush against the tank doesn't stay on so my filter falls back a little but not a deal breaker as it still works

Good product, need to work with it some to get it to work well
I've bought several of the hob filters, trying to find a look, sound and fit that I like. Several products are sub par. Either too small a unit or very noisy. This filter is a good size for my 10 gallon planed tank. It runs very well is quite powerful, and keeps the tank very clean. The bad. The pipe that goes into your tank fits very awkwardly on the body of the filter. Because of this fit there was constantly air in that chamber making it noisy. It takes some fidgeting to get it correct and you will have to do this every tank change. The spacer on the back is attached, to give you the ability to change the angle of the water fall going into your tank. This is a good idea, but poorly executed on this product. The spacer easily is knocked off by regular use. I gave up on trying to get it to work. All in all I would buy this product again, the price is great and once situated, the pump works well.
