Garmin XL Overland
The large screen works best for me, highly visible screen. Variety of apps for dry camping, National Park Lands and BLM info. Inreach capabilities as well. Much more, buyers should look up the specs for details. Windshield mount is incredibly strong. Heavy duty construction.

I Will Never Go Out into the Wilds Without My Garmin Tread!
I go off road a lot in the northern upper peninsula of Michigan. The two track and other roads are not marked the best. Recently, coming home in the dark I would have got back to camp without this GPS but I would have put on a lot of extra miles. My gut was saying to go in one direction but the Garmin Tread said to go in another direction. I went the Garmin direction! I was so glad I had it. Once my gut and the Garmin came into alignment it made sense why the "all seeing eye" of the Garmin Tread said to go the way it did!I know the price tag is high. I choked on it as well. But if you can get past the price bring this GPS if for nothing more than the large screen and for the how it connects to other cameras. I no longer need my Garmin 62.Honestly, in the old days I used a Topo map and compass to get around. That system is still relevant but using the Garmin is so much better. For night time driving out in the wilds the Garmin Tread is superior to my Garmin handheld GPS. Do I still keep a compass in my pocket? You bet!

Very disappointed! Off road maps are non existent.
I live in Lake Havasu City AZ and I have a RZR and a 4WD truck the I like going on backroads and trails with. I'm retired and want to travel the U.S. using back roads and trails instead of staying on the interstate. I have a Garmin golf watch (love it), InReach (love it) and a Garmin Nuvi (no problems). The Good: So when I received the Garmin Tread Overland and saw how well it was built, sturdy, great screen, easy to operate. The windshield mount is heavy duty and I had no worries it would bounce loose when I was off-roading. I couldn't wait to use it.The Bad: NO OFFROAD TRAILS (WTF Garmin). When you use some competitors' apps (which you need cell phone signal for)it looks like a massive cobwebs in the desert surrounding the city but on the Garmin there is only a couple of short dead-end trails.More good (Customer Service): contacted Customer Service and they were honest. They said the maps I had were their best maps and they couldn't sell/upgrade me with anything better. They said I could buy some other brand maps and try to load them on my Garmin Tread Overland. :(At least they were straight up about it.More Good: Easy to return (Still waiting on my refund)Summary: It is sad that with the reputation the Garmin name has they couldn't hook up with competitors and purchase some quality off-road maps.

It takes a little time to get to know it but works awesome.
We just got back from the black hills and it was very nice to have it. If you turned on a trail it would then tell you the trail number. We just went without worry about getting back home when time came to go home we just put in our camp ground and it took us back. It gives plenty warning for turning corners and highlights trails and you can read it during daylight hours. Kinda speedy but hopefully it will last, I also wish you could plug it into the power outlet that the machines have. I have a Honda and the battery is under left fender lots of wire to run to get by rear view mirror. Its a game changer! Steve

Good if you just want to use the preinstalled Nav apps
Up front, we are returning this device. We do a lot of overlanding and RVing, so we wanted one unit that would support whatever adventure we chose. The Tread XL Overland seemed like it. We use Onx mapping when we overland now and had read we could use it on the Tread. Well, not exactly, according to the internet you have to "To install onX OffRoad on your Garmin Tread XL Overland, you'll need to sideload the app (as it's not directly available in the Tread's app store) by enabling developer mode, installing F-Droid and Aurora, and then authenticating with your Google account to install the app." Sounded complicated, plus you would need a Windows computer - we are a OSX family so that option is out. The default is IOverlander, which we have used but does require you to download mapping/imagery before hand and that requires a wifi signal. Again, not show stoppers if you're planning a short trip, but we wanted it for four month trip up through AK, so our options were downloading everything to multiple sim chips and swap them out as we headed North. Our system was used, so no manual but plenty of online sources for that data. We liked the HUGE 10" screen and the menu functions seemed easy to use. All in all not a bad unit, pricey for $1000 and complicated if like us you wanted to use something like ONX maps.
