Must have
I bought a used 15 wide mod vee jon boat a few years ago and it already had this system installed on it. the winch ended up locking up and was no longer usable but it was very old and poorly maintained. I replaced the winch portion with this new one. I never realized just how much I use an anchor . Pretty much any time you want to hang out in one spot and there is any sort of wind. This system makes anchoring a breeze. the winch is in the back near my seat and the rope is guided along the gunwhales by mounted rollers towards the front of the boat and the keeper is mounted on a piece of starboard (composite board) on the bow. When I want to drop anchor I just reach over and turn the knob, then it's as easy as cranking it back in when I want to move,it has become a necessity. I would highly recommend. It also keeps the anchoring system neat and out of the way. Once you try it you'll know what I'm talking about.

Attwood says bad batch...
Received 2 defective anchor lifts, called Attwood, the rep said they have a bad batch. They said they would replace them under warranty for 2-years.Here's the problem, sending defective product to Attwood for replacement will run out the clock with Amazon for a replacement or refund (30 days-ish).Attwood would not guarantee the replacement will be defect free.Even with a 2-year warranty from Attwood this could be a problem. So, I returned the defects to Amazon, (which is problematic on refunds, now 2-weeks to process) for replacement.Got 2 replacements, both defective, called Attwood the rep said I can continue returning to amazon until they run through the bad batch. When all four were here, I did an inspection and found the problem. All 4 spools were out of round causing the spool to seize on retrieve and release. The only way to correct this is to disassemble the spool and re-weld it correctly or play yo-yo with Amazon or Attwood until the defective stock is used up.I'm not doing a warranty with Attwood, because they aren't inspecting this product, and therefore are not trustworthy. So now I'm playing yo-yo with Amazon once more before I do a refund.Based on a lot of bad reviews, this item has been a problem for too long to be a bad batch and is just junk.Worth Anchor-Mate was the original manufacturer and they worked great, the Attwood's are made overseas and clearly shipped and sold without any quality control at all.

These are absolute necessities to any small boat!!!
I have had several of these mounted on a few different boats over the years and I consider them a must have on any boat under 20 foot without a power winch.I'm currently building another 16 foot beer-can for salt flats and these were two of my first purchases!A few notes for the nay sayers...I bought BOTH of mine from Amazon as *used returns* for a discounted cost. These were beat up a little during shipment. Owning these before I knew there isn't much that actually goes wrong with them so I had no fear of saving $50.If you have difficulty with locking/unlocking... the 3“ round top cap is a press fit *snap on* type design. They get knocked partially loose in shipment sometimes. Don't fear popping these caps off to realign the twist knob, reseat the unlocking lever into the spring, or disassembling and lubricate the whole drum assembly every year or two.If the crimping on the 3" caps fails over the years you can use a few dabs of polyurethane caulking to hold them down.Attwood use the sell parts for these, I don't know if they still do. (unlocking knobs, pulleys, springs etc) But I've rebuilt a few due to saltwater issues.Over all, these are mechanically super simple, easy to maintain, easy to fix and just simply WORK!!!Some are boaters, some are just boat owners. ;)

Anchor winch
Seems like it’s gonna do a good job. The rope is thick hard to tie on.

Get what you pay for, rusted to crap and bends easily
Cheap metal, rusts quick, spool freezes up. Also bends easily
