What happens to the fluid

I'm not quite sure what you mean by what happens to the fluid? This doesn't vacuum fluids up. It has a canister that holds cleaning fluid that will spray out the front when you press a button. The rotating pads just clean/buff the floor.

Is this more for polishing floors or as an alternative of a regular mop and bucket?

It is an alternative to mop and bucket. I bought extra pads and change them out to mop each room. I don’t see it as a polisher.
