How do you take off the head?

With difficulty! It took me half and hour. The instructions are not at all clear. Hard to describe but you just press the head away from you. It is quite stiff.

Can I buy a replacement micro shaver head guard

Sorry I don't know as I found it a bad buy and don't use it.

How good is this trimmer for 'down stairs'?

It’s pretty good. It has a sensitive area head but the normal clipper heads work just as well. Just don’t use the bare clipper heads on loose skin :)
