Q: What's the difference between f-402 vs f-301

F-402 feels nicer because of the weight verses the F-301. I also think it's the grip difference. F-301 has a plastic grip and F-402 has a nice thin rubber grip. If you want a nice metal pen either one works but if you're going to spend the money you might as well get the F-402 it is wonderful to write with. F-301 feels more plastic to me after using F-402. It is definitely worth the price for F-402.

Q: Is the barrel all one piece of steel, or is the part under the rubber grip an insert (possibly non-metal)?

Under the rubber grip is a plastic tube sheathing a thin metal shaft that allows the tip to be unscrewed from the body of the pen. That is where / how the ink refill is changed. - The pen is Very solid and sturdy.

Q: Are these the Zebra pens with the thicker barrel than the usual Zebra pens? Thank you

The black portion of the barrel is thicker and cushioned.

Q: Will these take the Rite in the Rain refill?

Yes, I drilled all three of my F402s with a 7/64th bit, wrapped the whole pen in gardener's stretch tape. I did not even bother removing the conical tip. Then I used compressed air to revome the SS shards. That way I can use Fisher and rite in the rain refills. Plus I also remove the plastic Parker "ratchet" from my Parker "G2" ball point (not Pilot G2 gel) refills, so they can be used too (now length is the same as Fisher/RITR). The Parker (actually Schnieder XB) thick ink has never leaked, but I am carful anyway since the sealing end is missing. I once added a cotton-tip down the cartridge (and discovered the refills are only half full anyway) for greater leak assurance.
