Keep the acetate!
I read a lot of the reviews that said that the board stains easily and you cant wipe it off completely, and I was concerned about that. The board arrived nicely packaged with foam protecting it from the markers, and there was a sheet of clear acetate on the back (magnetic) side of the board. We placed the board on our refrigerator and then placed the acetate over the front. It stays in place with static cling, but I put a couple of fridge magnets in the tip corners to keep it from slipping. When we write on the acetate, it show up nicely and erases completely and perfectly, leaving the board underneath in pristine condition. I love the large size and all the marker colors that it comes with. My daughter has already started coloring in the vegetables at the top. I think this was a great value for the money and I would recommend it.
