Destined to become a classic
This book has all the hallmarks of a classic anthology: well-chosen essays across time, place, theme, style, aesthetic, purpose, and more. The emphasis is on their timelessness, on their ability to still speak to us cogently. I’ve discovered several authors new to me. It comes with a helpful and erudite introduction by Arvind Krishna Mehrotra, where his wide-ranging knowledge of Indian letters is amply evident. An anthology like this necessarily involves selections and exclusions that will not satisfy everyone, but I can’t think of another scholar more qualified to attempt such an ambitious project.

Not for general reader
I was expecting it to be a great collection of essays. Although care has been taken to make a representative anthology of the genre, the readability aspect has not been taken care of. Certain essays appear very heavy and you cannot simply finish them. The introduction itself is too long, and is of little interest to a general reader. Overall, this volume may be valuable for academicians, it cannot interest the general reader much.
