Hi - sorry for the late response but until recently Amazon didn't allow sellers to answer questions. Hopefully you and/or others will still find this information useful. There are no hidden tubes, the water falls from the top to the reservoir then recycles to the top. So yes, you can run your hand through. - The Lamps Plus Team

No. There is no pool of water in the base. It is immediately recycled up to the top.

Q: How easy is this to take apart for cleaning? most fountains don't allow enough space for a small hand to put all the pieces back together!

Not hard to clean at all. But, I quit using it as a fountain but more of a knickknack.
