How much salt/pepper does the grinder container/barrel hold? Looks kind of tiny.

Hello Maria, this is Maria :-) from Grind Gourmet, these mills hold quite a bit. It takes a while before you need to refill them, but when you do it is really simple, just unscrew the very bottom metal base and scoop in salt or pepper. We recommend keeping a freezer bag of your salt and pepper to make it easy to scoop in the contents versus trying to pour in salt and pepper. There are six people in my parent's home where these are used, I'm told even with regular daily use they don't need filling that often. We recommend using small to medium granule salts, not over filling them and giving them an upward swing to release the contents of the mill around the grinding rod to allow for easy/smooth grinding. Give them try, you'll love them. Not only are they environmentally friend, due to the fact they don't require batteries, they keep your texting thumbs in shape :-). Thank you and have a great day.

are these the vic firth pump and grind/? if not, how do they compare?

These grinders are pump and grind. They give out a decent amount per pump, normally it only takes a pump or two for me to season to my preferred level of seasoning. I've also dropped them a couple times from height onto my tile floors and they've held up well.

Does it come with the stand? Is it lucite? No battery needed? ARe they new?

Yes this listing is for Grind Gourmet's ORIGINAL mills, these mills come with the stand on this listing. If you are receiving mills without a stand you have invested in a knock-off mill. Only Grind Gourmet's mill sets come with a lucite stand made for two mills. We do however offer this stand as a separate item for sale on Amazon. No batteries are needed as these mills are thumb operated, you push down on the button, which moves a metal rod down through the salt/pepper to crush them on the way to your food.
