It's just a cover plate that goes behind the nest to hide where your old thermostat was.But your new nest will come with a white square plate that does the same thing so no need to buy one unless you like the looks of the chrome round one.

Do I have to uninstall to put it on?

Yes. You’ll need to unhook the wires to install the plate.

Very poor quality

Much like some of the other recent reviews here, the finishing on the plates wasn't to the level I was expecting. The edges were very sharp, so much so that you had to be careful when handling. Both the front and back surfaces has a number of scratches and scuff marks. I ended up returning these as it would have detracted away from the quality of the nest product that they would accompany on the wall
