what are the picture sizes that fit well onto these?

Smallest is 2x3 (wallet); 3.5 x 5 fits best and nothing larger than 4x6 as long as there is room around the edges of the image to be able to trim a bit.

Can you fit a standard mug inside the middle?

Yes I’d say so but not I’m the smallest box .... it would be too small
