I concentrate on roots and affixes when I teach vocabulary. Words common to social studies as well as words found in our reading comprise our word wall. These are what I have my students concentrate on so that on the standardized they can break down any word that is unfamiliar to them. They don't particularly like doing this until, of course, they begin to realize they can loosely take apart any word they don't know and come up with a pretty close definition, thereby unlocking meaning they need to understand what they're reading.
