Q: Can you tell me if these feathers were gathered while the live ostrich watched? Or were they harvested when the ostrich was...um..less active?

This is collected when the ostrich changes its feathers, so each feather will be slightly different.

Q: Would these work for making quill pens?

I am not sure of the process of make quill pens, but these would definitely look good converted to a quill pen.

Q: Can this be used as a cake topper ?

I don't know what is in the bleach or dye used to process the feathers; so I'm not sure if the feathers are safe around food. But, if you insert a small glass or vase into the cake first; then arrange the feathers in the vase, it might be be safe. Good luck, I hope this is helpful.
