Does this work with iPad Pro 2020?

It works on my iPad Pro 12.9 5th Gen with iPadOS 16.3 - plug and play. OS 16.# added CAC reader capability to Safari.

I have a new macbook air with catalina. will i need software for this to work or is it already present?

I'm not a mac user but based on an answer to a related question, it should work natively with Catalina. It worked with my Win 10 system just by plugging it in. Good Luck!
