I will suggest u to tell the kid to play with the suction type bullets which are safer if it hits someone as its tips are of rubber as compared to other plastic tip bullets . Instead of gifting ur child bb bullets gun, gift this. The only drawback of this gun is that u need to apply lot of pressure to pull the lever for reloading. I Will Not recommend this gun for anyone who is weak because sometimes when u are pulling the lever and if u slip then the bullet automatically releases and if u are holding the gun in a wrong direction while reloading then it might hit someones eyes/face. So teach ur child to hold the gun pointing on the floor while reloading. Some people might say this this gun is not accurate but trust me its accurate as compared to a bb bullet gun. We cannot have a real gun accuracy with a gun at this price. Its the best gun at this price range. Whenever i visit my nephews place we do target practice by keeping plastic bottles or boxes and the bullets hit the target accurately.Thanks for ur time
