Academic, detailed, laden with info
Firstly this is not an ideal guide for someone who is interested about using ayurveda in their lives. This book is ideal for the serious student who is studying ayurveda in a knowledge/skills based applied course to third level. Therefore look at other of Dr Lad's books designed for the general public if remedies or applications are desired. This touches on absolutely everything from the philosophies and vedantic basis of ayurveda theory through to anatomy, location of the doshas and progressions in various diseases. So it is a compendium of physiology, epistemology, cosmology, philosophy, spirituality, herbalism and nutritionism. Very thick and fast as regards info and at times mind bogglingly so. Its a real deep reservoir of info and I am so glad Dr Lad committed it to paper for future generations.Just don't expect a quick skim read will do the job!!

A must have...
This book was recommended by my Ayurvedic Tutor as an essential reading. It delves a little further than the normal books on Ayurveda and is unique in the sense that it is the first "text book" offered to us Westerners on the subject of Ayurveda. Dr. Vasant Lad is of course a key figure in bringing this ancient system of health to the West. And as with all his books it is clear and concise. It is a must have for the student of Ayurveda and is a nice edition to those who want to know more about this fascinating subject. I highly recommend.

Great Text books for Ayurvedic students
These text books are brilliant..Dr Vasant Lad does a great job of making Ayurveda accessible to westerners taking this path of healing. ALL his books are of excellent quality, but for those not learning with an Ayurvedic college this series of textbooks are not a practical introduction, go for something much simpler, unless you understand Sanskrit and then these may not be so hard.
