Q: It doesn't look like there are claws on both sides of the opening. How well does it pick up if the poop is down in the grass, not just on top of it?

Not well. To be honest, I seldom use it, just easier to put my hand inside a thick pooper bag and pick it up myself.

Q: Can I use regular grocery plastic bag for this product?

Dear Harris D. Rafield, Thank you for your interest in our products. Yes, you can use standard poop bags with the medium side pooper scooper.
