Why I bought this machine
Normally I would say that a couple hours after unpacking the box is far too soon to write a review, but not this time. My new Brother MFC-J4335DW all-in-one fax machine was easy to set up, and worked flawlessly from the very beginning. It connected to wireless and my computer both without any problem or hesitation, faxed correctly even before connecting to anything but a phone line, and the print and fax quality are both excellent. It even faxed handwritten notes clearly, which is not something we can expect from most faxes. It replaced my old Brother MFC model that I bought on a discontinued/clearance table for $45 in 2009, which had outperformed its expected lifespan by at least 60,000 perfectly printed pages!!! It was still working beautifully in my office when the print head suddenly clogged and could no longer be cleaned, after 16 years of such heavy use. My old fax will receive an honorable burial, and after such an impressive performance I was not going to replace it with anything but a newer model from the same line. After setting it up and testing it, I am very glad that I did. (Yes, I have used other machines, and have a large HP laser fax at home that is nice, but it does not print in color or duplex, and can't come close to the speed and versatility of this Brother MFC, which takes up less than a quarter of the space.) This machine is small and lightweight like the old one, with a tray that holds plenty of paper. The ink cartridges also seem to be very generous, so I do not anticipate constantly changing them. The features seem to be very well designed and user-friendly; the display screen is a nice touch, programmed pretty well so that I did not need any instructions to complete my setup. The control panel tilt option is another nice feature. The buttons are soft, non-slip, but perhaps a little small and close together for some people, so if you have very large hands it may help to use something like a blunt stylus or pen to push the buttons - which the soft surface allows you to do. Overall, this seems to be a very versatile and well designed machine, definitely worth the price, and if it proves to be as durable and reliable as the old one, it will be one of my best electronics buys ever.

Excellent quality of product, fast printing and scanning, efficient use of ink
Extremely pleased with this printer. Surpasses my expectations for quality, capability and function. It does take time to set up, but their user guide makes it easy to follow procedures. It took me 30 minutes for a full setup, about 10 minutes longer than expected. I use it wireless only, mostly 15 feet away from my Macbook Pro. I print directly from applications, and sometimes by using the free Brother Print & Scan app. The printer upports double sided printing, and gang scanning. Furthermore, it is highly efficient with ink. It has FAX function, but I don't use it. I fully expect that the original ink tanks will last me a year, since I don't print photos, but only small graphics in PDF documents, food recipes, or web pages.

Update: 8 months of ownership, and it's already a useless piece of junk.
Update: I've only had this printer for 8 months and it is a useless piece of junk. I've spent hours on the phone with Brother support, wasted gallons of ink "cleaning" it, and the print quality only gets worse and worse. I'm done with this thing and never buying another Brother product. This is ridiculous. My next step is to compel Brother to honor their warranty. After 12 years of hard service and expensive ink, I retired my HP printer and tried this Brother. Here are my first impressions:The Misses:1. I hate the 1980s grey plastic design. It looks like crap on my desk, particularly since all the rest of my computing equipment is black, but I was buying for functionality, not style, I guess.2. I have postage stamps that are bigger than the LED display on this thing. It's not easy to see and you have to scroll down to see some of the messages the machine is providing.3. The set up is kind of clunky and involved compared to other printers. Some set up is done on the machine, other parts are done by going to the Brother website where you have to figure out where to go to download the drivers. I was looking for something on the website home page that said "set up your printer here", but instead you have to hunt around.4. During the set up process, it asks to download several ancillary services. These are not well explained, and I may have inadvertently downloaded annoying bloatware. We'll find out.5. If you are considering printing photos with this machine, just stop and move on to something else. My HP was far better. The photos are crisp, but the Brother interprets certain colors in bizarre ways. For example, white tents are rendered in light blue. Looks very strange compared to the actual photo.6. The power cord on this is ridiculously short compared to my HP, and I pretty much had to change my entire desk set up to stretch the cord far enough to reach my power strip.7. It wouldn't kill Brother to give you a printer cord if you want a wired connection. Fortunately, I was able to reuse my HP cord THAT CAME WITH THE MACHINE.The Hits:1. Printing a standard page of text with an illustration or two is lightning fast. I've never seen an inkjet as fast as this.2. Standard printed text is very sharp.3. It's more compact than my old HP All in One, mostly because the paper tray doesn't stick out an extra 5 inches on the side.4. It is much quieter than the HP, which would go through a lot of noisy gyrations just get itself prepared to print.I'm not sure I did the right thing in buying this printer. I wanted to be thrilled, but so far I am not.
