Lava stone what more could I ask for.
I got this to put in a DIY pond filter I made. The stones are around 1-2" with lots of surface area, perfect for what I needed them for.

I thought the reviews were an exageration...
This is crap. Sorry I can't come up with a more polite word. I regret pouring it out to wash it before realizing that it is mostly crumbs. This created mud and the very largest pieces are less than an inch while most are less than 1/2 inch. This is basically small gravel and a ton of dirt and dust. Now I have to clean up the mess it made and dry it back out to send it back because it is definitely not worth the money. Save yourself unless you want crumbs and dirt.

Much smaller than depicted , , , but OK for my purpose: bread-baking steam
These lava "rocks" would be best described as "pebbles" instead -- as others have said they are very small . . . almost all are less than 3/4". They are definitely NOT suitable for use in a BBQ. Received in an unlabeled heavy plastic bag, so no telling who, what, or where these come from. But after reading other reviews with similar opinions, I chose to purchase these because I needed lava rock for use in my convection oven to generate steam when baking artisan breads and baguettes. I was able to put about 3.5 pounds in a 2" half-size stainless steel steamtable pan which now allows me to pour in about 2 cups of boiling water and create a nice large cloud of steam when preheated to 450-500 F. If that's what you need, these are perfect. They were reasonably clean with a small amount of fines, but should still be rinsed well before first use in baking.

Works great for providing steam for baking bread.
I bought it to put in my oven to enhance steam. But I read what you had to do to prepare it, and it is a bear. First, rinse the stone. It will make a big mess in your sink, but I did it. Then you are supposed to boil it for 30 minutes. I got an old canning kettle and boiled it. Then you have to drain it again, and put it in a preheated 500 degree oven to dry. I did, and used it the next day. I had for a long time used a sheet pan in the bottom of my oven to provide steam. But it just wasn't doing the job. The instructions I had said put water in immediately before you put the bread in, and then put in more along with the bread. I also misted the bread and the inside of the oven. I got the crackly crust of my dreams. I recommend oven mitts when you add the water to protect your hands from the steam. Also, I had to get the sheet pan off the floor of the oven and put it on a rack, so I could pull the rack out to more easily pour in the water.

They match perfectly
Love that they perfectly match the ones that came with my gas log fireplace, because the log fireplace didn’t come with enough. I am just glad that I had an option to order more.

Small
About the size of a marble. To small for what i needed them for. Hope this is helpful to others.

Rocks are smaller than they might appear in the image
These rocks ended up looking very good in my gas fireplace, but I had hoped they would be larger. The average diameter of the rocks is about the size of a dime, so they're more like small pebbles than rocks in my opinion. Their colour and texture is consistent with the image, however.
