Has anyone tried this on carpet and do you need 2 switch systems for multiplayer?

You will need a switch as well as a circuit for each individual player.

The entire box is another language (japanese?). any compatible issues with us systems?

You can set the default language to English

Can you run Luigi cart on Nintendo light switch?

You should be able to. The game is a free download in the Nintendo store. The cars and the gates are what comes in the box.
