Q: For a first-timer what's the best way to try this and not spend a lot of money how would I know if it is fresh or even good

Spend the money for the 1 oz to give it a try. Did this with the white truffle and it was just heavenly!!! The flavor and smell was not anything I have every tried. Put some in eggs and was great. Ate some with some cheese and the aroma just float up the back of my mouth. Infused in oilive oil and salt. The best was mixing truffles in with butter and making truffle butter which was out of this world. Use it within a week or infuse it and will last 1 to several months. Taste of truffles also sent sample of thier salt and butter with differant orders and they were great too. If you can afford it as a treat , go for it!!! Taste of truffles did not disappoint!!!
