This is the final original studio album of the "EMI" period to be remastered and features the Mark IV line-up featuring David Coverdale, Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Glenn Hughes and Tommy Bolin. The CD features the original album remastered on CD 1 and the whole album remixed by Kevin Shirley (Iron Maiden production supremo) on CD 2 along with 2 previously unreleased tracks.

Classic Rock anthem
This is a reissue / remaster of the tenth studio album by the legendary British Rock group Deep Purple. It was the only album by the Mk IV lineup of the group that included vocalist David Coverdale, American guitarist Tommy Bolin, who replaced the “irreplaceable” Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord, bassist Glenn Hughes and drummer Ian Paice. The album presented nine original songs, mostly co-written by Bolin and Coverdale with some contributions by Hughes. This remastered edition was expanded with one bonus track, which is a single version, and also adds a whole second CD with new remixes of the original album and two additional bonus tracks, which are outtakes from the original recording sessions. The lineup change had significant influence on the musical direction, which took the band closer to American Rock and featured heavy Funk influences, mainly due to Bolin’s guitar style and songwriting, but the prevailing riff dominated and Blues influenced style remained mostly intact. Coverdale turned out to be a fierce lead vocalist, to some degree more rounded and stable that his predecessor. Sadly, this lineup would exist for just a few months, and Deep Purple disbanded by mid-1976 and it will be only eight years later, when they would reform again. Bolin died of drug overdose just a few months after the band split.Overall, this is an everlasting Classic Rock gem, which lost nothing of its glory over time and stands as an icon of what Rock music is all about, making contemporary “Rock” look utterly ridiculous. It is an absolute must to all Deep Purple fans and in deserves an honorable place in every decent record collection.

Deep Purple puts the pedal to the metal on this one
Deep Purple was one of the first bands that started my love of music way back in 1970. Listened and collected their albums until Burn and then started a soul sucking job that consumed my life. In recent years I really started listening to CTTB , the first without the great Richie Blackmore. Can’t believe I’m saying this but they really are playing like a big weight has been lifted off of their shoulders. Gone are the long bloated tracks that grew tedious at times and replaced by high energy songs and under the five minute mark. The musicianship is better with everyone contributing to the punchy technical tunes. There are two discs with original and the 2010 remastered versions that has two amazing unreleased songs with the Bolin Pace Jam my favorite. Tommy Bolin’s playing is every bit as great as Richie B’s. Can’t believe I’m saying this but its now my favorite DP album

Tommy Bolin
Ive been waiting to get this and i saw it was remastered with bonus tracks so i had to get it,first of all the sound quality is fantasticand everyone in the band is in fine form this was after Blackmore and Ian Paice the vocalist left replaced by David Coverdale and young Tommy Bolin.I first heard Tommy Bolin on a Billy Cobham solo album and i was amazed at the guitar player i think he was 21 when he was the guitar player great album too, well he went to Deep Purple and tore it up on guitar and at age 23 he died of a drug overdose. This is why i HATE drugs look how many great musicians have died because of that crap why Tommy i keep asking myself you were so good and so young, its a sad cd but if you love Deep Purple like i do and you love GREAT guitar playing this a must have to your collection.RIP young Tommy

Remix is better.
This contains both a remastered disc and a Remixed disc in this 2- disc set. When I played the remastered copy is was...eh. But when I put on the remixed disc is was so much better. The sound was a hole lot better. I was just going to throw this into my almost never play again section. But the remixed disc saved this cd set.

Great remix and extra material
I have been a fan of Deep Purple and Tommy Bolin since the 70's and I will admit at first I wasn't a huge fan of this album. I bought in on vinyl in the early 80's and at first I didn't quite get it. Don't get me wrong. I liked it, but Tommy's style is so different than Ritchie Blackmore's, and I liked Ian Gillian's vocals more than I did David Coverdale's. As the years went by, I got older and I appreciated this album more and more. One of my complaints was that the mix was always a little muddy, especially on the CD I bought several years ago. This remix cleans up the muddiness for sure and brings the bass and drums more into the mix. CD1 is basically a remix, and it shines. Every instrument is clear and each performer gets their chance to showcase their individual talents. Tommy's work, as always, is incredible. Even in the throes of his ever growing drug addictions, he turns in a stellar performance on guitar and echoplex. CD2, with I think is a different remix, is pulled from the master tapes and a few of the songs are longer, allowing the band to finish the songs instead of fading out on the original version. Tommy in particular, gets some added time and it is well worth it. There are also two songs that have never been released. One is Same in L.A, which is probably and outtake from the album and is a fine short song with limited vocals. The other is a five minute scorching jam with just Tommy and Ian Pace that showcases Tommy's extordinary guitar work, as well as Ian's fantastic drumming. If you are a fan of Deep Purple, but can't comprehend anyone but Ritchie on guitar, give this a listen. If you are a fan of Tommy Boiln, and never heard this album, or only had older versions, give this a shot, you will love it.

been around
these CDs get sold without displaying the back cover and no track listings. if it had I would not of bought this CD because of two remastered versions of every song on the album. I am old school and remasters don't impress me and this one is no different. Going from vinyl to CD for sales is as much remastering you should do. Deep Purple please don't mess with your vinyl pressings

Classic Purple! Glad to get this version in the collection!
Deep Purple - pioneers and yet, somehow underrated! Really glad to get this version of the album - it's a nice addition to the CD collection!
