As the review title implies, I consider this to be an accessory, not an essential. One could, after all, simply travel with their DE razor 'unloaded,' saving your fingers from potential slices as you hunt for your razor in the toiletry bag. But while it not be an essential item, I do think it is a worthy addition to your shaving kit. After all, DE razor users aren't usually minimalist when it comes to our facial hygiene when considering the attendant gear: Shave soap/cream, blades, badger bristle brush, alum block, after shave.... So why not treat your razor as well as you treat your face while on the road, while avoiding nicks on the fingers?For what it is, this is a well-made product. It fits my Merkur HD Classic well and snugly. The real leather is about as nice as that of my toiletry travel bag, which is fine enough for me. It is about as well made as possible for an item such as this, which is to say it should last just about as long as you choose to travel. I don't see mine ever wearing out. The snap closure is light but positive and the stitching around the sides is nicely done. It is long enough to accommodate most long-handle versions, and the hood is wide enough to extend a good 1/4" on either side of the business-end of my razor - a nice touch that shows some thought went into keeping fingers away from the sharp stuff. Leather on the outside, the interior is actually lined - another nice touch.I rate this at five stars because it does well exactly what this type of accessory ought to do. Could it be better? Sure, it could be cheaper. The price seems about right, though, and I prefer the natural leather to a plastic case or fake leather.While it may not be an essential item, I'm happy with it and would purchase again.

I purchased this because I travel a lot and noticed my safety razor chewing a hole in the mesh pocket of my shave bag. I was immediately impressed by the quality of the product. It is long and wide enough to easily fit my Merkur classic and Muhle R41 open comb. The inside is covered with suede to protect the finish of your razor from abuse. The inside of the metal snaps are completely covered by the suede, so no worries about scratching even there. The leather is heavy duty and smells very leathery, which I enjoy. I really believe this will last years and be a great addition to my travel kit. I will probably buy one for my wife who recently switched to a safety razor as well.

This holds my Merkur 180 long handled razor and my Edwin Jagger DE89 very well. The case is well made and feels like it will hold up to years of use. I store my razor in this so my 3year old is less likely to drop my DE on her head if/when she gets into the medicine cabinet. Before I bought this I was taking the blades out of my DE razor after drying my razor after each shave. This also makes a great travel case and fits well into my toiletries zippered bag. The leather is decent but not super high end. This case serves its purpose extremely well, and I will buy it again when I expand my razor collection.

EDIT: 10 years later.This has travelled with me over approximately one *million* air miles. It's a little worse for wear, I still use it. The one time left my razor loose in my dop bag instead of in this nifty holder, I cut my finger. Totally annoying. I certainly have remembered it each time since. Still working well. Strongly recommend. I was a little skeptical that my Merkur would fit, given how big and heavy it is. It fits fine - though it is quite snug. This was really great for travel, because I was able to stow it in a larger toiletry bag without having to worry that the razor would cut/scrape other stuff in the bag or that little bits of my face would fall of the razor onto my toothbrush.Recommended. One star off because the leather feels a little cheap, but it doesn't impact the functionality or (I don't think) the longevity of the holder.

I have used a Gillette Super Speed safety razor (~1960's) for better than a decade now. While I travel somewhat infrequently, I do travel every other month on average. This case has been great for traveling with my razor. It provides adequate protection when packed in my dopp kit, protecting the blade from contacting other items in the kit.When traveling, I do towel off my razor prior to packing, however, it never seems to be completely dry when time comes to pack up for home. I have noticed no issue with the inside of this case when placing a slightly damp/wet razor in it. The build quality is overall impressive; as I have been using this for 2-3 years now, and it shows no sign of wear--other than becoming somewhat form-fitted to my razor.If you have not yet tried shaving with a DE, I would defiantly recommend it--not only is the shave better, it is far, far cheaper than other disposable multi-blade razors sold today. As a user of a DE, even if you travel infrequently, this is a must-have accessory for travel with your DE. I would defiantly purchase again.

This is an acceptable razor case for the price, and it is indeed real leather. That being said, it isn't very good leather, and the "felt" lining described by some reviewers is relatively cheap. I was looking for something stylish to accent my new Merkur razor. It fit the razor fine, but my older Parker razor barely fit. I'm not thrilled, but I wouldn't say I was ripped of either.
