Very smooth and dark easy writing and sketching.
I was about to buy the very expensive Blackwing pencils and read a review on these, so decided to try a box first. Very pleased with these pencils. The wood is fine enough to sharpen nicely and the writing is smooth and dark. Excellent gliding feel on paper. I'm happy with these and glad to not spend the extra money. I use external erasers anyway, so don't need the fancy rectangular ones on the other pencils.

Smooth writing; nice color
I recently came across this, and it really impressed me on multiple levels. Its standout feature is the elegant brown wrap that immediately catches your eye. The earthy tones of the wrapping give it a classic and refined look, something you might see on a desk in a writer’s retreat or a rustic art studio. As for its performance, this pencil is incredibly smooth. I use it mostly for writing notes, and the lead glides effortlessly across the paper, almost as if it were designed for the purpose of making handwriting a more enjoyable experience. The softness of the lead strikes a perfect balance—not too soft to smudge easily but just soft enough to give a dark, clear line with minimal pressure.

An excellent pencil
This, along with Tombow’s version (2558) are both excellent pencils to write with. As enjoyable as Blackwing 602 (imo) at a much better value. Keeps a tip much longer, as well. Also, check out the Mitsubishi pencil sharpener - outstanding sharpener

The Mitsu-Bishi 9850 is the best Japanese pencil with built in eraser
The media could not be loaded. The Mitsubishi 9850 gets a lot of love from pencil experts. When I began collecting, I did not fully appreciate it as tends to happen when one meets a top model too early in their journey. The two Japanese HB (equivalent to a No.2 pencil in USA) pencils that appears on most pencil experts favorites list are this one and the Tombow 8900 (available in 3 grades, no eraser). A few years into collecting, it’s plain to see why they are tops.Is the 9850 as good as the Uni or Hi-Uni? Not to my hand and I’m not a believer that more expensive is better, but in this case it indicates a higher quality graphite core. Is it worth paying 3x more per pencil? Like everything else in life, it depends on one’s needs, preferences, and priorities. It’s feasible that some pencil users, certainly in the USA, might prefer the built in eraser of the 9850 that does not exist on standard Uni and Hi-Uni. Moreover, it may be preferred by writers who value longevity and superb point retention. The core may be a bit waxy for those who prefer a buttery blackwing core, but the trade off there is point retention from that soft graphite.Take a peek at the video and images of before and after to see the point barely wore down at the end of the page. Even if it doesn’t check your boxes for function, it may for form. It is a fine looking pencil with sleek hexagonal burgundy barrel and contrasting white eraser. A lovely addition to any desk.

Aesthetic Feel
I’ve always stood by Ticonderoga wood pencils. Grew up using them. Tried other brands that don’t sharpen as well or feel odd when writing. These pencils made Ticonderoga pencils feel that way. The Mitsubishis sharpen more evenly. The wood of the pencil feels nicer on the fingers. Writing with them is a whole other level. Smooth and effortless. Plus, they just look nice. Red with a white eraser.

Never thought I'd be recommending pencils
This is a great pencil. They are well balanced, gives dark lines and lead doesnt break. Never would have imagined that I'd be singing the praises of a pencil - but here we are. Purchased for my kid becuase her pencil lead kept breaking immediately after sharpening and these held up well. The darkness of the lead and the slightly thicker barrel helped her to learn to write and she asks for these pencils exclusively now. They feel different from other #2 pencils from Target or Ticonderoga - just a bit heaftier, just enough to make writing sessions more comfortable and less taxing. These exceeded my expectations. Worth the price.

Great value. Not just for writing
These are excellent pencils. They look beautiful, and while they're good for writing, they're also great for drawing. In my opinion, just as good as pencils that are ridiculously priced in comparison. The wood is high quality, and they hold a point very well if sharpened with a quality sharpener. Good eraser as well. I'll be buying these from now on whenever I need some HB hardness pencils.
