Arban's Famous Method for Trombone

Fabulous set of exercises that covers the full spectrum of techniques for the serious brass player for all styles of music. Wish I had known about it years ago.

The Arban's book does provide a comprehensive set of exercises and builds various technical skills to a high degree. Careful practice of the book's material helps a player build a strong embouchure, gain facility with scales and arpeggios, and receive incredible training in flexibility and articulation (slurs, double-tonguing, triple-tonguing)-- which are of particular importance to a trombone player! The book also provides a nice collection of solos to learn.The Arban book lacks more advanced rhythmic skills (odd-meters, tuplets, polyrhythms, etc.). There are other ways a student/teacher can build these skills, either through other books/repertoire, or by creating custom exercises. Also, this method does not cover all 12 keys very even-handedly (though it could have). For some of the articulation exercises, a student can simply change the key signature (from Eb, to E, for example, or Bb to B) to help gain more facility in those keys.It's probably a little grandiose to call it a Bible or a Grimoire. It is, however, a masterfully crafted resource that no serious student of trombone should be without.Carl Fisher has recently published an updated edition which makes it much more readable (larger, clearer print) and it is now bound correctly so you don't need work so hard to read the edges of the pages along the binding. If you are considering purchasing the Arban's method, buy the new version!! It is a great improvement. If money is tight, by now you should be able to find the old editions more cheaply.

I remember the first time I heard my brother playing the Variations on the Carnival of Venice as a kid, and even more so when I first heard Wynton Marsalis on the cornet. While I haven't gotten near that level of competency, Arban's is definitely the way to get there.It is the definitive brass text that every classically trained trombonist will reference. Not for beginners, but will take you from amateur to professional (provided you keep at it). Plus, the study exercises are fun to play as well. Not like pulling teeth as I felt with some of the other books I've used over the years.The only reason I took off 1 star is that nearly a quarter of the book was bound UPSIDE-DOWN! And of course, I didn't notice until a few months in and I had already used it quite a bit (it was in the second half of the book that I was working up to).

This book was recommended by my son's private teacher. We have been surprised by the number of typos and mistakes in this most recent version, as the teacher has used it for years.

I use this when I practice, the book replaced an Arban's that was almost 50 years old.

If you are a brass student in college if you have not been required to get an Arban's book you hace at least heard of it. I just picked up the trombone book and really it is trombone/ euphonium. The methods start out slow with warm ups and then progresses from there. I owned the tuba book I picked it up and really my locker mate in college used it more then I did, so I wabted to get better on trombone and what better then arban's for the basics of intermediate to advance playing then arban's.

There is a lot in this book and no reason why any trombone player can't find something of value. Like the melodious etudes books, you can't go wrong. Even if you are a beginner, there is nothing to fear. Don't expect to get through this book right away or ever. Be prepared to keep it handy ad infinitum. This value of this book is immense. If you've had a couple of years of playing under your belt and you're dedicated to your horn, you can't go wrong. Don't think, just buy it.

Meine Tochter lernt Posaune, was ich ganz toll finde. Mit der Artbanschule hat sie ein ganz elementares Werk. Außerdem hat sie auch ienen tollen Lehrer, und davon hängt auch viel ab..
